I can’t believe how fast a year goes by!! We are celebrating our 3rd Holiday Season at Oh Simple Baby and we are happy to offer some great gift ideas this year.

A major shift has happened in the last few years, where it seems to be more of the norm to be looking for alternatives to plastic toys. A plastic play kitchen actually retails for roughly the same (if not more!) than our HaPe Educo Wooden play kitchens. The wooden ones are built sustainably, and are built to last. I love wooden toys, and I am happy that we have a great selection this year to offer our loyal customers.

We are now carrying Ecotots brand playroom furniture that is gorgeous, eco-consious AND modern. It is an investment that will last many many years to come.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our wonderful customers! 2009 has proven to be a great year for Oh Simple Baby, as we continue on helping parents make healthy choices for their children. On a personal front 2009 has brought many changes for our family of four as well, moving to Peterborough, Ontario and starting from scratch once again in a new and eco-minded community. I continue to be amazed at how quickly Canadian parents are learning about the dangers associated with the products that are sold for our children, and how often parents are deciding to raise their children differently. Though we are certainly not the only eco-friendly baby store in Canada, this Thanksgiving I am very thankful that over the past two and a half years Oh Simple Baby has gained a very strong customer base, and we continue to grow and be able to expand our product line and bring so many amazing products to Canadian families! I love hearing from customers, so please email or call even if you have a simple question. Every purchase is an important one, and I hope that all parents leave my store happy and informed.

On another note, I am THRILLED to have some new Naturepedic products on our shop. We have added Naturepedic Double/Full sized mattresses, Naturepedic 100% Organic Cotton Pillows, and  Naturepedic Airflow Sheets! All of these great products are now available to our Canadian customers!! I have been planning for quite a while to add pillows and am so happy that Naturepedic has made them. As my own children grow, I find that my needs are expanding, and I plan to continue to add toddler and young children’s products as well as baby products.

Welcome to our new blog and happy Fall to our amazing customers!  On our new blog, we will feature articles written to provide information on our products and the hazards that some may be unaware of. Our first feature will be on the MOST important aspect of a child’s early life, organic crib mattresses. We are happy to be a leader in the Canadian market, providing families across the country will the best organic crib mattresses on the market, Naturepedic. We chose Naturepedic for many reasons, and of course, did extensive research into the products used to manufacture these US made mattresses, as well as research on the company itself. I wanted to touch on some of the more frequent questions that I am asked by parents that contact Oh Simple Baby. One popular question I am asked is why I chose to carry Naturepedic products.

Naturepedic products are made using organic cotton, 100% USDA Certified. Many other organic crib mattresses on the market are made using latex or wool, which is a main reason that actually lead me to Naturepedic. The reason that organic cotton is superior for crib mattresses than the others is due to the fact that latex and wool are both highly allergenic, particularly to those young and immature immune systems of a tiny baby! Naturepedic does not use vinyl/PVC, phthalates and phthalate substitutes, PBDEs, brominated or chlorinated fire retardants, antimony, modacrylic, polyacrylonitrile, respirable crystaline silica, boric acid and many other chemicals that are found in mattresses. This is why I chose Naturepedic products, not only for my customers, but also for my own children rest their heads on everyday.

Another amazing feature of many of the crib mattresses is the waterproof quality provided by the polyethylene used. Polyethylene is a completely non-toxic plastic. I always describe polyethylene to parents by saying that although it feels like a plastic, it has a slight fabric quality to it. It is not crunchy and harsh like the PVC crib mattresses that you will find at your local department store. Polyethylene on the exterior allows messes to be quickly cleaned up leaving no mess. Parents also ask me often what the difference is between the Classic and Ultra models. The Classic is a completely polyethylene wrap with organic cotton on the inside, while the Ultra is Organic cotton on the outside as well with a “coating” of polyethylene. The Ultra is very luxurious and fabric-like. Both are amazing, and it is always a personal choice by parents on which they would prefer.

Naturepedic, an American company that actually manufactures their products in the US, has many awards behind them as well, recently the Canadian Parent Tested Parent Approved seal of approval, naming the Classic 150 Seamless model one of the top products of 2008.  All of Naturepedic’s products are also Greenguard Certified, and recommended by the very reputable children’s organization Healthy Child, Healthy World.
